Traceability
Tracking the movement of an item throughout the supply chain (manufacturing, assembly, storage, point of sale or transport) is made possible by using the GS1 System. This is because by standardising information is communicated information (same identifiers and electronic messages), you, your trading partners and your intermediaries all begin to ‘speak the same language’. So in the case of product recalls, there are no problems tracing the location of a product at any point along its supply chain.
Internal numbering structures, and the ability to encode additional information are available for internal identification purposes.
